The diverse backgrounds of the OK members meant that I would be able to learn from their Jewish experiences and, likewise, have engaging discussions. In addition, the Orthodox service provided me with a nostalgic experience.
Where did you live before coming to Durham, and how did you end up here?
Before coming to Durham I was living and working in Madrid. Growing increasingly unsatisfied with the situation for Jews in Europe, I decided to return to the United States and accept a job at Duke University.
What is your Jewish background from your youth?
I grew up in a secular Soviet Jewish household in Brooklyn. Therefore, my religious upbringing had been limited to sporadic interactions with Chabad and the High Holidays.
What do you like about Durham?
It is a relatively safe city with a downtown that has a plethora of restaurants, bars and coffee shops.
What attracted you to join the OK?

What are some of the highlights of your experiences at OK?
The first kiddush that we had at the OK, after COVID, was very dear to me because it highlighted the communal ways we Jews are able to enjoy Shabbat together.
Any OK community members who’ve had a big impact on you?
Without exception, it was a big pleasure to get to know and interact with every single member of the OK. I am especially thankful for Phillipe and George, who took the effort to make me feel comfortable and guided me during the services.
What were you looking for when you joined OK, and did you find it?
I was looking for a way to rekindle my connection to Judaism and the Jewish community at large. I think I still have a long way to go to achieve my goals, however, I am really grateful for the people that I have met on my spiritual journey.
Do you ever lead parts of the service at OK? Can you talk about our lay-led service?
I have not led the service, however, I can say that things run very smoothly at the OK.
What is your connection to Israel?
I have friends and family in Israel and have visited there a number of times. I think it is a wonderful place to live and I have a deep affection for the country due to its historic and divine significance.
Do you think people coming from Israel, Florida, NJ, etc. will find a home in NC and at OK? If so, why?
I think the quiet and laid-back atmosphere of NC is perfect for anyone who wants reprieve from the fast and furious aspects of the larger cities. Although our community is small, it is highly diverse, intellectual, and devoted to providing a spiritual and amiable outlet for the Jews in the area.
Best,
Simon
